Beautiful Myanmar: Luxury in the Buddhist capital

From spicy Myanmar food, to towering pagodas, to Buddhist monks and the largest and oldest golden monument on Earth, there are a million reasons to put an adventure in Burma firmly at the top of your travel list.

Ninety miles southwest of Mandalay, no visit to Myanmar is complete without a trip to see one of the most significant and archeological sites in Southeast Asia, the Bagan. This 26-square-mile region was once the sacred capital of the ancient kings of Bagan, and is now a mind-boggling, beautiful zone of more than 2,200 temples and pagodas on the eastern bank of the Ayeyarwady River.

One way of seeing Bagan in style is by taking the luxurious Ayeyarwady Adventure on the Orient Express. On your way there, you’ll visit the bustling centre of Burmese culture, Mandalay, as well as Sagaing, which is most famous for its silverware. A photographer’s dream, if the light is right when you reach the Bagan, it promises to create the perfect backdrop for romantic poses with the one you love.

Elsewhere in Burma, Shanlay village is considered by many to be the capital of Buddhist faith, while in the city of Yangon (Rangoon) take a leisurely stroll around the Shwedagon Pagoda, also known as the Great Dagon Pagoda. At over 2500 years old and 300-feet tall, this golden Buddhist reliquary makes for some excellent photographs and dominates the city skyline from afar. It is undoubtedly the city’s most impressive landmark.

In Yangon, a stay at the luxury resort The Strand offers large, decadent suites complete with teak floors, spectacular furnishings, grandiose bathrooms and lazily whirring ceiling fans to cool you down after a day’s exploring. The Strand is a Yangon heritage hotel and Victorian icon, built in 1901 but newly renovated with two wings including a special Strand Suite with views over the ever-busy river.
