South Africa Group Tour - Rhino Conservation Project
TAKE PART IN THE WHITE RHINO CONSERVATION PROJECT
Hands on, Rhino Conservation tour, Umlani Bush Camp, Western Kruger Private Reserves, South Africa
Discover the species being preserved and the wildlife education projects currently underway at these two valuable institutions. The White Rhino Conservation Project is committed to notching and inserting microchips into Greater Kruger National Park's 130-strong White Rhino population.
Accompany the chief vet and rangers from Klaserie Nature Reserve as they locate a rhino; take part in notching and microchipping the sedated animal. Spend time gaining an insight into the conservation efforts being made to protect the diverse wildlife of the Greater Kruger National Park. A key part of conservation is education and rehabilitation; visit the Khamai Reptile Centre and Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre to learn about the work being undertaken. Set out on game drives to track down the park's magnificent inhabitants; aim to have a close up encounter with one of the fearsome big cats that roam the savannah.
WHY SHOULD I JOIN THIS GROUP TOUR? This group tour allows you to travel like a local, you get to see parts of the country that other holidays don’t show. Ticking off the 'Big Five' is not the aim of this tour, but it does allow wildlife lovers the chance to gain hands-on experience of conservation. You also get a chance to give back, your contribution to the tour enables the Rhino to be darted and notched and checked and so it becomes protected.
WHAT IS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE? It is simple, we have tried to keep the accommodation cost low so as to make the holiday affordable. The emphasis is on the conservation and the learning elements and not on the accommodation
DO I NEED TO BE FIT TO JOIN THIS TOUR? No you don’t, you need to be able to get on and off an open 4x4 safari vehicle and to walk, otherwise you will be fine
WHAT OTHER WILDLIFE WILL I SEE ON THE TRIP? Hopefully you will see all the wildlife in the area including the big 5. You will be visiting rehabilitation centres for wildlife, birds and reptiles and insects so you will see a lot of diversity from close up and from far. You will go for a walk in the Timbavati and you may also see smaller wild things. The last group saw a huge herd of 500 buffalo and wild dog.
