Stay healthy as you fly

Travelling on a plane can be exhausting even without the irritations of jetlag. If you’re already sick, flying can make you feel worse and exacerbate your current symptoms.

Stay away from alcohol while flying. Dry air and lack of sleep are just two common issues associated with travelling by plane so take some earplugs and make sure you have plenty of water close at hand, especially if you’re not in an aisle seat.

Also, don’t rush back to work when you’re returning home after a trip. Try to take the next day off to recover so you can return in good health and good spirits.

Walk your way around the sights

Sightseeing plays a huge part in travelling to a destination you’ve never visited before. The best way to get around is usually on foot. When you’re travelling on two feet it’s always fun to uncover a hidden gem or a small local market or gallery that may have gone unnoticed had you taken a taxi.

Get the proper nutrition

When you’re on holiday it’s tempting to overindulge. After all, the most fun one can have while travelling is to try local treats and flavours. It does pay to be mindful of what you consume in a new country though.

Never drink from the tap unless you’re certain that the water is safe, avoid hotel breakfast items that can often be pumped with fat and salt and where possible stick to lighter lunches, which will make it less tempting to waste the afternoon snoozing.

Never overeat at buffets. Instead, try a tiny bit of everything but always stop when you feel full. This should keep the weight off your hips when you return home and look at all your holiday photos.

Take out travel insurance

You may have all kinds of plans in mind when it comes to exploring, and trying the local modes of transport is always fun. However, before you hop on the back of a motorbike in Bali, a camel in Cairo, or even a dune buggy in Dubai, make sure you have adequate travel insurance. It won’t stop an accident but it will stop you having to pay expensive hospital bills should the worst happen.
